This week I started my Grocery Budget Diet! My goal is to spend only $400 this month versus the $550/$600 I usually spend! The 4th put a little damper on my budget, but I made a few modifications that will hopefully save me money on my future purchases. I made my own laundry detergent and baby wash!! This saved me about $10 & it was fun doing it!
Instead of listing the grocery items I bought, I will list the meals I prepared for our two boys (2&6) & my husband and I. (There will be more than 7 meals listed since I do still (shamefully :() sometimes make separate meals for our 6-year-old. Don’t judge me! lol…I swear….he just doesn’t like food! 😦
Frozen pancakes, fruit salad, yogurt, poptarts, breakfast bars, cinnamon sugar toast, applesauce, banana pineapple smoothies, dinner leftovers, omelet, bacon, & hard-boiled eggs.
Homemade macaroni & cheese, Kraft macaroni & cheese, BLT sandwiches, peanut butter & jelly, tuna pasta salad, grilled cheese, chilli dogs, & cheese quesadillas.
Sloppy joes, garden salad with grilled chicken, whopper-like turkey burgers, ribs & leftover tomato & mozz salad, brats & leftover tuna pasta salad, Buddy’s Pizza, & Panda Express ;)…we eat out dinner on Friday & Saturday 🙂 I try to boycott cooking these days :).
Starbucks espresso lattes, iced Tea, milk, bottled water, juice boxes, iced coffee, applesauce, yogurt, tomato & mozzarella salad, yogurt cucumber salad, fruit, 4th of July popsicles, lunchables, & 4th of July fruit parfaits.
Washing Soda, baking Soda, kleenex, diapers, lavender castile soap, & deodorant.
So this week I spent……………..
Hollywood Market- $17.99
Bed, Bath & Beyond: $9.59 (I used my 20% off coupon, of course;)
(I went over my $100 mark for this week, but a lot of the items I bought can carry over for meals for the next week.)
Thanks for taking this journey with me!!! If you have any ideas or grocery savings tips to share, please feel free! I would love your input!! 🙂
Hello All! Thanks for taking the time to read my post! I appreciate it!! 🙂
This has been on my mind for this past week and it’s time to put it into action! How many of you overspend on groceries?? I know I do! It’s time to put a stop to it!!! I will be honest with you all…I probably spend around $550-$600 a month for a family of four. This is way too much!!! This is including paper goods, household items, diapers for my youngest, and food of course. At one point in time my husband and I went on the Dave Ramsey budget and we were able to pay off all of our debt!! Now that is over, we are back to using our debit cards for all of our expenditures versus using cash. I know it has changed the way I spend money on a day-to-day basis, but I know I still have room to improve in the grocery department :). I do LOVE food & with 1 hungry husband, 2 growing boys (one in diapers), and an old American Bulldog, it can be a bit challenging!!
So…..starting this Friday, July , I will be putting myself on a $400/month grocery budget diet! That’s $100 of spending (or less) per week. I have recently fell in love with Aldi’s which will definitely cut down on my spending! I would also like to mention I am kind of a health nut, so produce and healthy choices are a must for our household!! Oh, and I’m also a chocoholic and a sweet addict! I may have to cut back in this area (or scale back on something else ;)).
I am going to try a new strategy that has seemed to work out for me these past couple of weeks. Instead of the usual meal planning, brain racking, grocery list making, time-consuming tactic, I’m simply going to buy things that are on sale!! This way I save money, try new things, and I don’t have to waste my precious time outlining every single thing I buy! With Pinterest on my side, I can simply search the grocery items I have on hand to make meals with!! I will still make a list of necessity items so I am sure not to forget them, but as for the rest of our groceries, I will leave it up to the Sale Ads!! My grocery stores usually include Value Center of Royal Oak, MI, Trader Joes, Aldi, & the new Fresh Thyme Market in Troy, MI.
I will try to post weekly updates with pictures of my receipts!! Wish me luck everyone!
Hello All!! It’s been a while since my last post! I’m excited to share another venture of mine! Essential Oils!! I’m sure you have heard all the rage going on! I have been using essential oils for about a year now. I started off not knowing what the heck I was doing!!! I was saving pins on Pinterest, making scrubs, lotions, etc. I purchased my first oils from TJ Max, believe it or not! I was pretty impressed. I was using Coconut Oil mixed with Lemon & Tea Tree Essential oils for my Facial & Body Lotion. I also used it on my 2-year-old son and it has worked wonders for his Eczema. I really noticed a difference in my skin too!! It felt soooo much softer!!! It takes a bit to get used to Coconut oil.. A little goes a long way and it can feel a little greasy at first until your skin becomes more prone to absorption. It also has antibacterial properties so my skin was breaking out so much less!!!
I began using oils more and more to make Household Cleaners, Bug spray for my kids, etc. I was then introduced to Young Living’s Essential Oils by a good friend of mine from High School. OMG! I ended up ordering the starter kit and I AM IN LOVE!! What a difference between the TJ Max Oils and this stuff!! I have since then bagged up my non YL oils and have not used them since! Check out their site for more info on this amazing company: www.youngliving.com. The starter kit comes with everything you need and more! A diffuser, 11 oils, sampler bottles for sharing, sample packets for sharing, a roller ball to add to the oils, 2 packets of this amazing antioxidant drink that tastes amazing!! It also comes with amazing resources, their product guide, and so much more!!
I have to say, my favorite oil so far is Thieves. You can clean with it and eat it!! What cleaner is safe to do that??! It has SOOOO many purposes! Being a DIY’er at heart, I love the fact that it is so universal!! I suffer from really bad allergies which leads to sinus infections and just feeling like poo!! I used thieves in my coffee by putting just one drop into my mug for two days in a row. I also made a thieves tea I found in the resource available on Facebook called “The Lemon Aid Library”. It contained thieves, lavender, and lemon essential oils. I swear after drinking this, all the yucky junk in my chest and throat started coming out and my congestion is gone!! I really believe in these oils! I am still diving into all of the possibilities of using this for medicinal purposes, but I am a strong believer in God’s medicine! I am so excited about this stuff, I can’t stop sharing and talking it about it! My hopes are to help other people use them in their personal ailments, reducing harsh chemical intake, and simply help others! From healing properties, beauty products, to daily household items, there is so much these oils can do for you and your family!! I did not buy my kit initially with the intent on selling them, but after I got my own kit I became interested in the business of sharing them with others to help them too. If you are interested in learning more, please feel to contact me via my Facebook Page, Mama’s Mustard Seeds or comment below. Or you can simply order your own kit by clicking this link here: Young Living/Jessica Baker/Mama’s Mustard Seeds
Thanks for taking the time to experience my journey along with me! -Jessica 🙂
Hello All!! So far, so good in the eating fruits and veggies department!! I am down 2 pounds and my energy level is feeling great!! My hubby and youngest have been doing great too! My oldest, not soooo much.. I am still working on him!! My meals so far have included a zucchini, onion, and mushroom Quiche, Nachos with ground turkey topped with cheese, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, avocados, green onions, and a bit of sour cream (this goes over well with the hubby). My youngest picked out the meat, avocados, and chips. My oldest, ended up eating quesadillas, tortilla chips, and applesauce..a girl can try!! 🙂 I have also been making this banana-peanut butter smoothie! OMG! It is to die for! I found a recipe on Pinterest, but I modify it a bit depending on what I have on hand. It curbs my sweet tooth, but it is still pretty healthy! I put unsweetened coco powder from Trader Joes, peanut butter, vanilla yogurt, vitamin D milk, ice, a splash of vanilla, and 1 banana and blend away in my Ninja blender!! Sometimes I even throw a little left over Espresso from my morning coffee into it for an extra zing of energy! This morning I ate Cheerios with the boys and added some bananas. So far so good! I haven’t decided on what is for dinner tonight. I may do white fish with a yummy veggie side. I think I will go on Pinterest and get inspired!! That’s all I have for today! Have a wonderful Wednesday everyone!!!!
Another thing I am really passionate about is food!! Not always the healthy kind either! I have always been into healthy eating and nutrition since my college years when I learned a thing or two!! 😉 My goal for this week is to eat as many fruits and veggies as I can in hopes of keeping this a regular routine in our household. I don’t believe in diets, I believe in Lifestyle changes! I also hope to get my husband and children in on this Veggie and Fruit Overload. I have done my prep work and bought all my fresh produce yesterday from Aldi. Which by the way, has really great prices on produce and it is very fresh!! I usually do Trader Joes, but I am trying to put a lifestyle change on my budget too!! I am not against eating frozen produce either, as long as there are no additives, preservatives, or added sugar in them. My goal is to lose about 15 pounds but I am not putting a time and date on it. My main goal is to be healthy, have more energy, and feel good in my clothes!! I will take one day at a time. So off I go.. Monday day 1!!
Yesterday I cut up some cantaloupe and pineapple for the family. My 2 year-old and I ate some for breakfast this morning and it was delicious!! For lunch I am going to make some salads with turkey bacon, hard-boiled eggs, avocados, green onions, and tomatoes. Dinner tonight will be a crustless Quiche with feta cheese, spinach or broccoli, onions, and mushrooms. My mouth just started to drool!!
Wish me luck everyone!! If anybody would like to join me in my veggie and fruit overload journey, please comment on my website or Facebook page! I would love to share stories, recipes, etc. Happy Monday Everyone!!!
Hello Everyone! I haven’t written in a super long time!!! This stay at home Mommy business is no joke!! I have been home now for about 9 months now and let me say, it has been an amazing journey!! It is by far the most rewarding thing I have done in my life. Being able to be home with my two boys every moment (except when I need my escape, thanks Hubby & Grandma!!) has been such a blessing. I really feel deep in my heart I am living the way God intended me to. My purpose, my well-being, and my spirit is full of life!! I am so thankful to have this opportunity to be home right now raising my boys, tending to the home, and being able to be the Wife that my husband deserves! What a difference from the 40 hour a week demanding job & juggling the kids and household responsibilities. It’s not for every one being at home, but it is my journey and it is for me!!!! 🙂
In addition to being a Stay at Home Mom, I’ve been doing some soul searching on what my next steps are and where this life is going to take me next! For you who follow my blog and Facebook page, you all know I have a passion for turning old things new and creating home decor and household items. God has put something bigger on my heart lately though which one day at a time, I’m going to start pursuing. He keeps saying, “I want you to dream bigger.” Of course my natural response, is no way, I can’t do that, or another million excuses of why I wouldn’t be able to accomplish what my calling is. I have been down the road of either feeling like I don’t have a purpose, feeling like I know I have a purpose (but what is it?), or the “Ah-ha” moment knowing ok, this is it!! So what is it, you ask??? I could go on and on, but to keep it simple I will say this: I want to Inspire and Empower Women!!! I also want to be inspired and be empowered by other women!!! Whether the channel is through my Furniture Repurposing, Sharing Recipes, Making Household Items with Essential Oils, Sharing Faith stories, or just connecting over a cup of coffee. I believe each of us was put here on this earth for a reason… Each with our own unique abilities and skills. Let’s put ourselves to good work and use those abilities, passions, and skills to make this world a better place!!
I will keep it short and sweet today.. but I am a Woman on a mission!!!!! I will slowly but surely be creating a website that Inspires and Empowers Women!! It is a work in progress, and who knows how long it will take, but I WILL GET THERE!!! WWW.MAMASMUSTARDSEEDS.COM-Planting One Seed at a time!!!
Thanks for taking a moment to read my blog! Have a great day Everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
